Overview
The Global Initiative for Cancer Care in Syria (GICCS) is a multi-stakeholder initiative launched by the Geneva Alliance for Human Rights and Development (GAHRD) to support a coordinated, sustainable, and equitable response to cancer care in Syria.
The initiative aims to bring together national authorities, international organizations, healthcare professionals, academic institutions, and humanitarian actors to strengthen cancer services and address the growing burden of cancer across the country.
Why Syria?
Fifteen years of conflict have placed enormous pressure on the Syrian healthcare system. Cancer patients face multiple challenges, including:
- Limited access to diagnosis and treatment;
- Shortages of essential medicines and equipment;
- Lack of trained oncology professionals;
- Disruptions in continuity of care;
- Weak cancer data and surveillance systems;
- Significant disparities between regions.
Addressing these challenges requires long-term collaboration and coordinated action among national and international partners.
Our Objectives
Strengthen coordination
Promote dialogue and collaboration between national institutions, humanitarian organizations, academic partners, and international agencies.
Support health system recovery
Contribute to rebuilding resilient and sustainable cancer services integrated within the national health system.
Build local capacities
Support the development of the oncology workforce through training, knowledge exchange, and international partnerships.
Improve data and evidence
Promote cancer registries and evidence-based decision-making to better inform priorities and interventions.
Promote equitable access
Advocate for quality cancer care that reaches vulnerable populations and underserved areas.
Areas of Focus
- Cancer prevention and early detection;
- Diagnosis and pathology services;
- Access to essential cancer medicines;
- Radiotherapy and specialized equipment;
- Oncology workforce development;
- Cancer registries and health information systems;
- Psychosocial support and palliative care;
- International partnerships and resource mobilization.
Our Approach
GICCS seeks to serve as a platform for dialogue and collaboration rather than an implementing agency. Through technical exchanges, policy discussions, and strategic partnerships, the initiative aims to facilitate a more coordinated and sustainable response to cancer care needs in Syria.
Convening for Action
In August 2026, GAHRD will convene a high-level panel at DIHAD in Dubai entitled:
“Cancer Care in Syria: Towards a Coordinated and Sustainable Response”
This event will bring together experts and key stakeholders to identify priorities and foster partnerships for strengthening cancer care in Syria.
